The much-awaited Players Championship 2018 saw a lot of action on the turf with the Golf legends showcasing their gumption and skills at the Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. While American Professional Golfer Webb Simpson proved his mettle by cruising to victory at the Players Championships, a lot of other things and Golf titans like Tiger Woods garnered headlines.
We bring you the four takeaways that seemed interesting and significant after the Players Championship concluded.
Tiger Woods was never going to win the Players Championship on Sunday. But that didn’t mean he couldn’t make a strong statement.
And so he did, shooting a 3-under-par 69 to finish in a six-way tie for 11th place, seven shots behind winner Webb Simpson.
“I’m not that far off from winning golf tournaments,’’ Woods said, delivering his boldest statement of this comeback. “There’s no way I would have predicted I would be at this point the beginning of the year, the way I was just coming back and just trying to get a feel for it and then hopefully have a schedule. I didn’t know. But now I feel like I’ve got my playing feels and I’m playing tournament golf and I’ve got it.’
Justin Thomas became golf’s new world number one on Sunday, ending fellow American Dustin Johnson’s 15-month reign.
“It means a lot, but it’s something I want to have for a long time, not something I just want to have once,” Thomas said at the Players Championship where he tied for 11th.
Thomas won his first major at the PGA Championship last August.
The 25-year-old has won eight times on the PGA Tour.
From 208 yards away with a 6-iron, Koepka became just the second player to ever make a double-eagle -- or albatross -- on the par-5 16th hole. Rafa Cabrera Bello was the first player to card an albatross on the 16th at the 2017 Players Championship.
That moved him to 10-under par for the tournament. But in case that wasn't impressive enough, the 2017 U.S. Open champion stepped up to the daunting par 3 17th and stuck it to inside 10 feet.
