5 things you need to know about Donald Trump-the Golfer

If baseball is America’s fave pastime, you might say that the game of Golf is the fave recreational activity for US Presidents. From William McKinley, Bill Clinton, George Bush to Barack Obama and now Donald Trump, Golf has been an integral and a conspicuous part of their lives.

However, current US President Donald Trump’s association with Golf is a bit more complex and intriguing.

Here’s a lowdown of the 5 interesting things you must know about Donald Trump, who’s an ardent golfer:

  • During the US Presidential campaign trail, Trump forthrightly claimed that he’d never see his Golf courses again because he wanted to stay in the White House and work really hard. The reality: If reports are to be believed, Trump has spent 35 days at a Golf property since taking office. That amounts to more than 21 percent of his 164 days as President so far. He said once, “You need leadership. You can’t fly to Hawaii to play Golf.”

  • The US President drew a lot of flak when drove his Golf cart across the putting greens of the Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey. Many would vouch for the fact that as the owner of the Golf club, Trump could be pardoned for flouting the occasional rules. However, Golfers are quite strict on etiquette and were outraged at this incident.

  • Those who play Golf with Trump claim that he’s good in his game. One can see his talent in his swing. He played prep-school football, soccer and baseball at New York Military Academy, winning the Coaches and MVP awards while captaining the baseball team.

  • He is said to have won 19 club championships and possess a handicap of 2.8, which is really incredible– and also unlikely. Interestingly, there have been no signed scorecards submitted since 2014, and even those that showed several rounds in the mid-80s.

  • Trump believes in the notion that Golf should stay for the elites. He once said, “Golf may be elitist, and perhaps that's what Golf needs. Let golf be elitist. I feel Golf should be an aspirational game, something people aspire to play. People should come to golf, golf shouldn't come to them."
