For Australia’s Wade Ormsby, it was a dream come true. It took 264 attempts, but the amazing Golfer finally beat all odds to win his first Euro title at the Hong Open.
Wade Ormsby’s earned his 2012 Asian Tour card at the Qualifying School in Thailand
The 34-year-old golfer displayed a master class in technical finesse and grit on Sunday as he shot a 2-under 68 in the final round of the UBS Hong Kong Open to hang on for a one-shot victory over a quartet that was headlined by Rafael Cabrera-Bello and also included Sweden's Alexander Bjork and Americans Paul Peterson and Julian Suri.
He said, “It feels amazing, mate. I’m just trying to hold it together here. Yeah, pretty stoked. Well, not pretty stoked: Very stoked. I played solid all day and I just tried to keep pumping it out. Hit a lot of greens. Putter wasn't quite behaving but just played solid. Sometimes that's good enough. A bit disappointing to three-putt the last, but it's a tricky pin down there. Anyway, good enough. “
Disappointment for Chawrasia?
S.S.P Chawrasia struggled with a two-over 72 in the final round to finish tied seventh after leading for the first three rounds. Chawrasia, who had a one-shot lead at the top coming into the fourth round, was sailing smoothly, making three birdies till he got a triple-bogey on the par-four ninth hole.
He would have been the first wire-to-wire champion of the UBS Hong Kong Open had he won
He then recovered to get a birdie on the 10th hole but four bogeys out of the next five holes destroyed his title challenge. He got a birdie on the 16th to settle for a 72 which took his four-day total to eight-under 272 (65-66-69-72).
