India’s ace golfer Shiv Kapur is certainly breaking old moulds and setting new trends. The 35-year-old, who won the Asian Games gold in 2002, has once again shown his mettle by becoming the only player to qualify for the British Open Championship. The British Open will be held at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in England from July 20-23.
Kapur secured his spot at the year’s third major after shooting scores of 71 and 65 that gave him first place at eight-under-136, two shots ahead of the English duo of Ian Poulter and Toby Tree. Kapur was thus among the three players with the best scores who qualified from The Marquess’ Course at Woburn.
And the numbers are quite awe-inspiring. Kapur made 13 birdies, a bogey and two double-bogeys in his two rounds.
Currently placed 305 in the world rankings, Kapur is all geared up to earn more accolades in the forthcoming British Open. Interestingly, Kapur, who returned to the winner's circle in Asia after an 11-year gap earlier this year, has previously been part of the field at the British Open in 2006 and 2013.
Recently, Kapur grabbed headlines by finishing tied 34th at the BMW International Open golf tournament held in Munich. The ace golfer, who was in top 10 after his first round five-under 67, stayed there following three straight 72s.
This season, Kapur made two cuts on European Tour events, only one of them was in Europe in Sweden, and other was Malaysian Championships. He missed cuts at Golf Sixes in Australia and Hero Indian Open.
