2017 saw a lot of action on the Indian golf turf. The calendar will soon flip to 2018 and with the new year rolling around soon, it's time to take a stock of the top 5 Indian Golfers who garnered headlines this year.

Aditi Ashok

The meteoric rise of India’s 19-year-old Golf sensation Aditi Ashok has been phenomenal. The young talent generated a lot of buzz when she set a new record by becoming the first Indian to Qualify for LPGA Tour Championships. With a series of noteworthy performances including a Top-10 and starts at all five Majors, 2017 has been dotted with milestones for the Bengaluru golfer, who conquered the two LET events in 2016 and one in 2017.

Shubhankar Sharma

Leading his way, 21-year-old Shubhankar Sharma played his heart out in the energy-sapping Joburg Open to claim his first ever European Tour Title. With this win, he not only created history by becoming the youngest Indian to win on the European Tour but also secured his berth in the prestigious British Open next year.

The lanky lad from Chandigarh, who turned professional after winning the All India Amateur Golf Championship in 2013 as a 17-year-old schoolboy, has five wins on the PGTI and has been a regular on the Asian tour since 2015.

Rayhan Thomas

Dishing out an absolutely jaw-dropping performance, India's 17-year-old Rayhan Thomas, shot a 10-under 61 in Dubai during a round that included a record-tying nine consecutive birdies. Interestingly, Thomas, who is touted as the poster boy for the future of golf in both India and the Middle East, did so while playing alongside 2016 European Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke.

The young Indian, currently based in Dubai, started his run as early as the second hole, and his four at the par-five 10th matched the previous best in an Official World Golf Ranking event set by Mark Calcavecchia at the RBC Canadian Open in 2009.

SSP Chawrasia

SSP Chawrasia made history after retaining his title at the Hero Indian Open with a remarkable seven-stroke win in New Delhi. Chawrasia, 38, became the first Indian to successfully defend a European Tour title and the first player to win their first four events in their home country.

He also received the prestigious Arjuna award for his contribution towards Golf in India through his success on the European Tour and Asian Tour.

Gaganjeet Bhullar

Gaganjeet Bhullar held his nerve to complete a wire-to-wire victory and lift his eighth Asian Tour title at the Macau Open. He drained five birdies on the front nine and won by three shots despite a nerve-jangling double bogey on 16. The 29-year-old fired rounds of 64, 65, 74 and 68 for an aggregate score of 13-under 271, lifting his first Asian Tour trophy of the year.

Bhullar took home a winner’s prize purse of US$90,000 and became only the third player after Australian Scott Hend (2013 and 2015) and Zhang Lian-wei of China (2001-2002) to win the storied event twice since the tournament was inaugurated in 1998.
