The PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP 2024: TPC Sawgrass Awaits

Posted by Admin 15 Mar 2024

This week, The Players Championship, held at TPC Sawgrass, attracts the PGA Tours finest

The week at Ponte Vedra Beach is often considered the most significant event on the US tour. It features the most competitive field of the year and a prize of 25 million dollar.

The competition has been going strong for half a century, with the legendary Jack Nicklaus taking the trophy in 1974.

Last year, Scottie Scheffler won the legendary tour stop with a strong performance, and this year, a slew of notable names will try to get their season off to a fast start by challenging the world No.1s.

With a prize pool of 4.5 million dollar for the winner, this event is guaranteed to be exciting. The decisive concluding segment of the course, including the internationally acclaimed par-3 17th hole, will ascertain the victor of this year's Players tournament.

On that note, let’s dive into our complete guide for the 2024 PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP as we cover all the crucial details you need to know before the prestigious event.

Players Championship Event Information:

Date: Thursday March 14 th to Sunday March 17 th , 2024
Course: The Players Stadium Course, TPC Sawgrass, Florida, USA
Reigning Champion: Scottie Scheffler

Tournament Purse: 25 million dollar
Winners Purse: 4.5 million dollar
Course Statistics: Par 72, 7,256 yards

Players Championship playoff format and rules:

Before 2013, the Players' playoffs consisted of sudden-death shootouts that started on the renowned par-3 17th hole.

In 2014, The Players Tournament transitioned to a three-hole aggregate method, in which the player with the fewest strokes throughout the three designated holes is declared the winner. The selected holes are the last three—16, 17, and 18—played consecutively. If a victor cannot be determined, the participants will return to the 17th hole for a shootout.

In 2015, Fowler won The Players Tournament after winning the sudden-death hole, following a tie in the three-hole playoff score with Kisner.

As of 2024, the Players Championship will commemorate its 50th anniversary, marking the day when Jack Nicklaus emerged as the event's first champion in 1974.

What’s Up for Grabs at The Players?

The Players Championship has a substantial prize fund of 25 million dollar, making it the PGA Tour's most lucrative regular season purse. This amount surpasses the prize money offered by the major Events in 2024 by an additional 5 million dollar.

The victor will receive a prize of 4.5 million dollar and 750 FedExCup points. PGA Tour winners also gain a five-year exemption and a three-year exemption for The Masters, the US Open, the PGA Championship, and The Open.

Players Championship 2024: The Course

The Players Stadium Course at Ponte Vedra Beach, known as TPC Sawgrass, is a par-72 golf course that spans 7,275 yards. It is widely regarded as one of the top golf courses in the United States and is the venue for The Players Championship.

The Stadium Course, built by Pete and Alice Dye, has grass mounds resembling bleachers and was expressly created to host The Players Championship. It is renowned globally for its distinctive "Island Green" hole, par-3 17th.

Players Championship: The Betting Odds

The golf odds of leading favourites and challengers, sourced from top betting apps in India , are updated often and may alter, even for props and live betting.

The current Players Championship top-five outright winner odds are as follows:

S.Scheffler [+750]
R.McIlroy [+1000]
X.Schauffele [+1400]
V.Hovland [+1800]
P.Cantlay [+1800]

The PGA Tour’s Elite

Throughout history, The Players Championship has been often referred to as "golf's fifth Major" due to its ability to consistently draw a field of players of the same high quality as the four recognised Majors.

In 2024, the environment underwent significant changes due to the emergence of the LIV Golf breakaway circuit. As a result, the greatest players in the game seldom compete against one another due to the profound divisions that have arisen.

Hence, it is rather implausible to uphold such a slogan, given that many of the sport's top athletes are disqualified from participating in the 50th edition of the tournament at TPC Sawgrass.

It is rare for league tables to be deceptive in sports, but LIV seems to have completely abandoned the effort to argue for recognition from the Official World Golf Rankings.

Talor Gooch, the reigning champion of LIV's 2023 Individual Championship and now ranked as the 449th best golfer in the world, caused controversy by suggesting that if McIlroy were to win the Masters and achieve a career grand slam in major championships, it would be somewhat tainted or diminished.

Setting politics aside, the PGA circuit has remarkable talent and skill, as seen by the diverse range of unexpected and high-odds winners in the circuit's first tournaments. Wyndham Clark's triumph in the 54-hole competition at Pebble Beach is perhaps the least unexpected so far, even though he had to achieve a score of 60!
