GOLF CARDS AND THEIR SO-CALLED FREE ROUNDS

image
Posted by Dinesh Thakur 06 Aug 2013

Benefit/discounted Golf cards are not as beneficial as they seem, instead it is a BIG outflow of a lump-sum fee with a time limit on the membership - please be aware of the actual value to you instead of what can be seen on the cover of it. Here are TOP five reasons of the concept not being a hit:

1.       Most golf courses have started connecting their golf course tee slots on an online tee time system. This helped them manage their members, sell the available slots and also give discounts for less traffic time slots. This increased transparency with the golfers and the applicable fees. A similar concept is how you book your flight tickets on www.makemytrip.com.

2.
The value proposition of the card was not always clear. After buying the card, the golfer would be told of the Premium slots not being available. Best courses mentioned in the marketing material would mostly not be available for weekends.

3.
If the card was offering 15 free rounds for Rs. 20,000 some rounds would also be in a golf course like Qutab Golf course where the green fee on weekends is Rs. 600. Thus, defeating the may purpose of a discount or a green fee benefit.

4.
Golfers would calculate the green fee discount value based on the Tariff rates of the prime time. When most of the slots he would actually play were of the non-peak hours. This reduced the importance of paying in advance for a round which may be costing lesser.

5.
The biggest advantage of online booking was seen in the ease of searching for the available golf courses and also picking the slots of your choice. Over and above that, if the golfer was booking for example 15 days in advance the green fee discounts could event go up to 50% off. There was no need of informing 4 days in advance, awaiting for the available time slots, then reconfirming again with the playing fourball etc… etc.

Don’t we all love the word FREE? … we all want the best deals and the best courses …. but we all know ‘There is nothing like a FREE lunch’….

If you’ve got it, you must know!

Golf Lan products/services are also sad. I have had the bitter experience of purchasing a Taylormade RBZ set from them. There were issues like the the irons were graphite shafted but tags said "steel". The driver was of decidedly of poor quality. They didnt have RBZ fairway wood 3, so they gave RBZ Stage 2 wood which I did not want. The putter was 34" whereas I wanted 36". Their sales manager Vikram kept promising to deliver the required putter for two months and nothing happened. An email to them resulted in one oppologetic call but beyond that nothing. It is a take it or leave it attitude and they keep you hanging for months till you give up. I WILL NOT (R) NOT RECOMMEND GOLF LAN TO ANYONE.
