On the invitation of the Managing Director of Binowo Park Golf Club, a 4-man team from Delhi arrived in the small town of Szczecin in Poland (150 km from Berlin, Germany). They were all set to compete in three events which lay ahead, comprising of two team events and one individual event. The team comprised of Arjuna awardee Amit Luthra, Suman Puri, Kapil Kathpalia and Advait Luthra.

The first event was played at Binowo Park Golf Course, a challenging Links-style golf course though playing very short at below 6000 yards. It had narrow fairways and 3-feet tall grass skirting the edges of every fairway. Out of a total 6 teams (comprising of 4 members) there were 3 teams from Poland, one each from Berlin and Brussels. After a long day of golf in windy conditions, Amit Luthra shot a spectacular one-over, followed by a three-over-par by Suman Puri to clinch the title by a substantial margin.

The second event was a match-play at Binowo Park again. The first round (9 holes) was played to decide the finalists, who would play for first and second position in the following back nine the same day. The first game saw Amit Luthra play against Binowo Parks’ star player. The local however, seemed to be no match for the spectacular Indian golfer as he defeated his opponent 3&2. On the same day, Suman Puri clinched victory against his opponent while Kapil Kathpalia had some trouble and stumbled against his opponent. It was all down to Advait Luthra to make par on the challenging last hole to push Team India-DGC through to the finals, which he managed. The final round saw a gruelling battle in which Amit Luthra (1 down halfway through) won 3 holes in a row to win 2&1. Advait Luthra sailed to victory with a 5&4 victory against his opponent. The score was tied at 2-all as Suman Puri and Kapil Kathpalia narrowly lost their matches in spite of an early lead.

The final day was played at a Gary Player-designed course outside of Szczecin called Modry Las. The individual event seemed to be an easy win by Amit Luthra, who shot a one-under on the short but challenging course to clinch the title, followed by Suman Puri in second with a strong 5-over-par. Advait Luthra finished in 4th with Kapil Kathpalia close behind. In a gracious display of sportsmanship, Amit Luthra gave his first place prize to the leading junior who was ecstatic to have received the trophy & the gifts.

The team definitely upheld the name of Delhi Golf club as well as that of India by taking the international teams by storm. The roaring display of the Indian team proved to the countries participating that they were not to be taken lightly.
