India's Shubhankar Sharma best putter as Wallace pips Johnston to clinch the Hero Indian Open

India’s current poster boy of Golf Shubhankar Sharma might not have won the tournament but he has certainly won a lot of hearts with his stunning performance at the Hero Indian Open that concluded on Sunday.

 

While Matt Wallace of England defeated compatriot Andrew Johnston at the first playoff hole to win the US$1.75 million Hero Indian Open, Sharma earned the distinction of the best putter in the tournament. Over four days, he averaged 1.51 putts per hole.

Hero Indian Open champion Matt Wallace was all praise for Sharma, saying he has the game and temperament to go a long way.

 

"For him to achieve all the things he has done, he has been phenomenal. He has got so much talent and the things that he has done in the last couple of months have been phenomenal," Wallace said.

When 4moles.com caught up with him for a quick chat, he enthused, “This is my 4th visit to India and I love the weather here. I am a hard-core epicurean and you’ll be surprised, I thoroughly enjoy the culinary delights of India especially the spicy curries. They are just awesome!”

We caught up with Gaganjeet’s Bhullar newly wedded wife Naureen Sandhu, a lawyer by profession, who came to cheer for the ace Golfer. She came up with an interesting revelation. “I played Golf when I was in my school and I found it quite an interesting one. However, I was more focused on my studies, so Golf did not happen as a career,” shared Naureen.

 

 Quiz her more on Gaganjeet and she says with a smile, “I love the way he focuses both at his game and his home and he knows to strike a great balance. Only a few have the ability to do that.”

Talk about Thailand's ace golfer Thongchai Jaidee and one thing comes to your mind - He's the alpha male of the Golfing circuit. When we caught up with him, he shared, “No life without Golf. Without Golf, I don’t know what I can do. I feel aimless.” Talking about playing in India, he shared as he signed off, “It’s always amazing to play in this beautiful country. I love the golf courses and love interacting with the people here.”

What happens when all the age groups come together to witness the magic of Golf? The result is a heady mix of some ‘feel-good’ factor and a bountiful of raw energy.

 

It was heartening to see kid Golf lovers from Scottish High International School making a beeline to watch their fave players tee off. Ankita, one of the teachers, explained, “We have introduced Golf as a part of our curriculum and we encourage youngsters to try the sport. Our golf curriculum is focused on making the experience of golf for children fun and educational.”
