Now, there is a ‘red revolution’ in Golf. And it would be not out of place to say that Golf pundits are bullish about the future of the game in India. Recently, Golf in India got a major fillip with the proclamation that Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) events will be eligible for official world ranking points.

The Governing Board of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) approved the inclusion of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), All Thailand Golf Tour and the Japan Golf Tour’s Abema TV Tour, into the OWGR System.

Uttam Mundy, CEO of PGTI, in an exclusive interaction with 4moles.com, reveals, “This is a huge fillip for Golf in India.  Indian Golf will gain a lot of momentum and is all set to grow on a higher trajectory. PGTI has worked indeed hard on this for the past 18 months or two years. We are delighted to have and received the support of all the major tours in the world. I would like to take the opportunity to thank have to thank the Asian Tour for recommending our name and helping us through the whole process.”

While PGTI is carving a niche for itself in the international terrain, we take a closer look at how Golf in India will get benefited by this move.

Higher rankings, more incentives

Higher world rankings will call for varied incentives including automatic entry into tournaments. Being inside the top-50 gets a player into every major championship, while everyone inside the top-100 get into the PGA Championship.

Easy entry into Olympics

Not many know but it is also the only benchmark that can get a golfer into the Olympics. Moreover, it is noteworthy in a country like India where many sports are funded only on the basis of participation in the quadrennial games.

Sponsors play a crucial role in developing the game

In addition to the core benefits, sponsors will play a vital role in boosting events, developing the game and creating on-going revenue streams – which is the need of the hour.

Harder competition, attracting more class players

The development opens new avenues for the over 150 professionals working on the circuit and would also attract quality players. This means harder competition, as well as local Golfers, get a chance to hobnob with their foreign counterparts.

Increased prize money

Ace Golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar said in a brief interaction with 4moles.com, “I think it’s great news for Indian Golf. Now PGTI, that has been excellent in raising new talents, can attract international players. We will definitely see the prize money going up because of this factor. More money and much harder competition, that’s what we need right now.”

Clearly, with this move, India is all set to take rapid strides in the world of Golf.
