Thailand’s new Golfing sensation Supamas Sangchan comes across as a discreet girl with a low-key demeanour. But it’s her amazing golfing skills that does the talking. Her spectacular performance at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters bears testimony to the fact.
Thailand's Supamas Sangchan is making waves at the international Golf circuit
The young talent leads the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters after the first round, going round the Emirates Golf Club in a five-under-par 67 on Wednesday.
The world No 238 birdied four of the first six holes on her inward nine and ended the day with a one shot lead over Scotland's Kelsey MacDonald, Nanna Koerstz Madsen of Denmark, Finns Minea Blomqvist and Noora Tamminen - who had a hole-in-one at the 140-yard 11th - and Australia's Celina Yuan.
England's Charley Hull, the world No 28, is three off the lead, recovering from one over after 12 with three birdies in the closing six holes.
With several players emphasizing that the greens were pretty “fast”, Sangchan hardly made a wrong move and then said: “I play three events like this. I play good, so it gave me confidence to play good here.”
Supamas is being congratulated by one of her peers at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters
Acknowledging that she liked the golf course with an emphatic “of course”, the 21-year-old admitted that putting would be the key factor over the next three days and that she would continue to, “try to”, keep putting well.
After sending out a strong message for her rivals, Shangchan allowed herself a little smile. For the most part, she looked serious and answered questions in one sentence, sometimes even just one world, or with a shake or nod of her pretty heady.
However, on the course, Shangchan, cut a totally different figure. Confident and full of purpose, she never dropped her guard once and stayed focused on “playing good” golf.
