Thai Golfing sensation Phachara Khongwatmai, who’s slowly making his way into the international Golf circuit, is looking forward to qualify for The Open for the third time when he makes his debut at the Joburg Open.

Phachara Khongwatmai made his debut at the Open in 2016

The 18-year-old Phachara played at The Open in 2016 and 2017 after earning a spot through the Qualifying Series in Thailand and Singapore respectively. He is now aiming for one of the three tickets available at the Randpark Golf Club.

The Joburg Open will form part of The Open Qualifying Series where the leading three players in the top-10 who are not already exempt will qualify for The Open in 2018.

The talented Thai, ranked sixth on the Order of Merit, will contend for the title against an elite field which includes Major champion and home favourite Louis Oosthuizen, Dylan Frittelli, who won last week and Gavin Green of Malaysia.

The Joburg Open, which is the first event to be sanctioned by the Asian Tour, European Tour and Sunshine Tour in South Africa, will be played over two courses - Firethorn and Bushwillow. The weekend rounds will be staged at Firethorn.

This will be Phachara’s 28th tournament in 2017 where he has notched two runner-up results and a tied third finish at the Resorts World Manila Masters last month. With a solid season so far, the young Thai hopes to make it even better by winning his first Asian Tour title this week.

China’s Liu Yan-wei was delighted to receive an invitation to be among the 240-man field at the Joburg Open. He hopes to maintain his fine form after finishing third at the inaugural KG S&H City Asian Golf Championship in China last week.

He is currently ranked 64th on the Order of Merit and will need to break into the top-60 in the final Merit ranking to secure full playing rights on the 2018 Asian Tour season.
