Rory McIlroy's face was locked in rage as he walked off the 18th green at the Earth Course on Sunday. He tore at the top of his shirt after leaving the public arena, almost ripping it in half, enraged by his failure to win the DP World Tour Championship. He was looking good to collect his third victory in the European Tour's season-ending event as he held a two-shot lead with just a handful of holes remaining.

But on the 15th, he set up a wonderful chance for birdie with a monster drive, only for his pitch to rocket off the flagstick and into a greenside bunker, where he couldn't save par.

McIlroy bogeyed the next and came within a few yards of slicing his drive out of bounds and into a neighbouring garden on the last, resulting in a bogey and a disappointing 74 that left him five strokes behind Collin Morikawa.

Matt Fitzpatrick, 27, of Sheffield, knew he needed to successfully defend his championship to have a chance of winning the Race to Dubai, and he made a thrilling try on the final day with a 66 for a share of second place and another seven-figure paycheck to follow up on last year's.
