GRAND FINALE REPORT
May 15th 2010, New Delhi, India: Asian Gold Medallist Amit Luthra walked away with Individual Honors at the Grand Finale of the Thomas Cook Indian Golf League played at the Golden Greens Golf Course on the 14th of May 2010.
The Grand Finale was contested by players who qualified through the seven qualifying rounds played at three different golf courses over the last two months. After 400 played rounds, the field comprised of 38 finalists and 20 invited dignitaries like Kapil Dev who played for a different set of prizes.
Amit shot of a round of 2 over par to score 34 gross stableford points (without handicap). Tying him on the same score were youngsters Dhairya Kumar and Gaurav Toora, but Amit prevailed on a countback.
The Winner in the Stableford category on original handicap was Saran Prasad who scored 39 points while Gaurav Toora finished Runner Up with 38 points.
For all those players who did not have handicaps the scoring was done on the Double Peoria system which gives a player his handicap for the day, based on his score over 12 hidden holes. Other players were also scored on this system.The winner of the best stableford score based on Peoria Handicap was Swadhin Patel who scored 39 points while Sumit Kapur finished runner up with 38 points.
Amongst the Invited dignitaries the Winner was Col Bajwa who scored 37 ponts while Sanjay Sharma finished runner up with 35 points.
The youth brigade made a mark with young Anchal Bhayana winning the Best Ladies Stableford score award with 35 points while young Dhairya Kumar, who missed the main prize in countback to Amit Luthra, won the Best Junior award for his efforts.
Amongst the highlights of the day was a Hole-in-One scored by Diplomat J Daulat Singh when he aced the 4th hole of the Golden Greens Golf Course and received a special prize for his efforts.
Amir Hussain was declared the “face of the league” while Sohrab Sitaram it’s Brand Ambassador. Young Ansh Hussain was nominated the “Mascot” of the league and received a blessing from the legend Kapil Dev in the morning in his quest to be a champion golfer.
The unique scoring format of the concept promoted by Digraj Golf made it possible for everyone to compete in the Thomas Cook Indian Golf League. The tremendous response which led to each qualifying round being a full house, including outstation players, established the proof of concept that the league can help grow the sport by providing more playing and competition opportunities to each and every golfer, thereby creating an opportunity for more people to learn and play.
During the prize function held in the evening at the Tabula Rasa, the various prizes were given away by the sponsors and also professional golfer Ram Dayal. Speaking on the occasion, Rakshit Desai of Thomas Cook declared the league a huge success and forecast that the future for the league looked even bigger thanks to its potential to promote the sport and get more people into golf.
