Even the greatest need ghosts to chase. For Rory, it’s not Tiger. It’s Augusta.
There’s something poetic—almost cruel—about Rory McIlroy and Augusta National. Four Majors. Countless wins. A generational swing. Yet, year after year, April in Georgia turns into a Greek tragedy for the Northern Irishman.
In 2025, Rory returns to the cathedral of golf for his 17th attempt at The Masters, with one goal: to finally complete the Career Grand Slam—a feat achieved by only five legends before him (Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods).
But will this be the year he lays the ghost of 2011 to rest?

It’s impossible to talk about Rory at Augusta without mentioning that Sunday in 2011.
He stood on the 10th tee with a four-shot lead. The world believed it was Rory’s coronation day. What followed was a collapse that still haunts highlight reels: a snap hook into the cabins, a triple-bogey 7, and a back-nine 43 that handed the green jacket to Charl Schwartzel.
“It's a lesson I’ll never forget,” Rory said years later. “The Masters doesn't forgive hesitation.”

Augusta National Golf Club
This year’s Masters is shaping up to be one of the most explosive editions in recent memory. The prize pool has swelled to USD 21 million, making it not just the most prestigious, but one of the most lucrative titles in golf.
Here are the big names Rory will have to outduel:
Notable Absence: Tiger Woods, due to recovery from Achilles tendon surgery

In 2022, Rory gave us a glimpse of his Augusta magic once again with a final-round 64, holing out from the bunker on 18. The crowd went wild. But it wasn’t enough. He finished second.
That moment, though, proved something vital: Rory still has what it takes. The fire. The finesse. The flair.
He’s changed since 2011. His game is more complete. His perspective, matured.
“I used to want it too badly,” he said. “Now I just want to let it come to me.”
Rory’s Masters saga is cinematic. Think about it:
Either way, Augusta becomes the stage for golf's most compelling drama.
Because every golfer has a “Masters” of their own—a course they can’t conquer, a round they want back, a shot they still see in their dreams.
Rory represents the eternal fight to break through, to silence the noise, and finally—after years of trying—get it right.
Golf isn’t about perfection. It’s about perseverance. And no one embodies that better than McIlroy at Augusta.
If Rory wins, it’s history. If he doesn’t, it’s heartbreak. Either way, the world will be watching.
The 2025 Masters tees off from April 10–13 at the legendary Augusta National Golf Club, with Scottie Scheffler returning as the defending champion after his dominant 2024 victory. The tournament boasts a USD 21 million prize pool, awarding USD 4.2 million to the winner. Augusta has bounced back beautifully after Hurricane Helene, and the course is tournament-ready.
