Delhi's golf course fate up for public vote

Did you know there is a golf course in north of Delhi, near Bhalswa Lake called Bhalswa Golf Course?

The 100-acre Bhalswa Golf Course being developed by Delhi Development Authority (DDA) since 2003 started as a 3-hole course and was later expanded into the current nine-hole setup. Future plans were to make it a proper 18-hole golf course.

In the current turn of events, major media houses have published that the future of the facility has been put to public vote. The DDA is now reaching out to the people through public notices seeking their suggestions on the utility of the sprawling green space. They will continue this exercise till June 28.

However, it is worth noting that the Bhalswa Golf Course project and its development never kicked into second gear where it could have been marketed to the right audience of surrounding colonies, the likes of Model Town, Civil Lines, Rohini and other posh colonies of North Delhi.

A few takes can be summarized as:-

• The quality of the grounds was not improved enough.

• The golf course was not marketed correctly to the golfers residing in North Delhi.

• The golf course could have been used to conduct camps for the schools in nearby areas.

The view portrayed by other publishers of Burari, Bhalswa Village and Azadpur not producing golfers is not entirely correct. Also, being the second public course in Delhi (first being Qutab Golf Course), access to the golf course is open to all.

If Bhalswa Golf Course is developed and brought up to the level of Qutab Golf Course by the DDA, the plus points of it would be:-

• Generate employment and economic benefits in the region as a requirement for caddies, ground maintenance staff, etc. increases.

• Increase in tourism within the area.

• Unless proper facilities are available, exposure to the game of golf across the masses declines. Thereby, chances of unearthing hidden talent are missed out on.

• As an ecological benefit, the damaged lands can actually be restored or improved by running a golf course over it.

The course should be properly developed and made available for the public at reasonable rates and not like what they have done with Qutub Golf Curse. PPP is a good idea. Nevertheless it should not be closed.

Dear friends DDA is awaiting response from public on Bhalswa Golf Course . If u agree then pls forward this mail...your one effort would save the bhalsawa golf course in north delhi (Plz copy and paste the below and fill the info given at the below and please send it to [email protected]) Do Not Close Bhalswa Golf Course In my opinion Bhalswa Golf Course should not be closed because there is no golf course in entire North Delhi. Once closed, residents of North and West Delhi will be deprived for ever. Increase membership by making due publicity in local newspapers and social media. Advertise existence of golf facility in North DelhiMake it 18 hole course before judging its utility. Once developed, Golf course will be a star attraction for tourism in the adjoining lake area. There are sufficient pieces of land in the nearby area where parks can be developed. Only few golfers play here since the facility is not complete and not properly advertised. I would suggest you to upgrade and advertise in addition to it with increase in membership to make it more attractive and profitable for the DDA.Regards, NAME Mail ID Address Phone Number in Case you agree with the content and want to save Bhalswa Golf course for our Golfing Cimmunity Please support

Instead of promoting the sports and encouraging people to take up golf authorities think of commercialization of the Golf course is disgraceful! As for parks they are aplenty but there's hardly facilities like this available anywhere. Compared to 100s of Public golf courses in other countries we have just 2 in India.

The course has been developed and is now in good condition thanks to its current Sectry Mr Nag Its quite absurd that DDA after sending huge amounts hvae suddenly developed a malafide attitute to deprive the NCR golfers with the facility which can be devloped in like with qutab course and can be marketed well My appeal to all fellow golfers to unite and save Bhalswa for Golfing community

I may not totally agree with you Rajan ... My view is that DDA should take out a tender for a PPP (Public Private partnership) model with a clear blue print of a sports complex with Golf Course. This has been successfully been done at Manesar Golf Course in Gurgaon. The same has been taken over by ASCOT Hotels ... ! ... By making a public park will not help in anything.! ... Also, at Qutab Golf course the membership cost of Bureaucrats went up to Rs.1200.

DDA does not deserve to take away public land for the recreation of bureaucrats at a later date ,as they have done in the case of Lado Sarai course, making it prohibtively expensive for the common man, while bureaucrats enjoy the public space at an insignificant cost. The place would be better used as a public park for youngsters to play any other sport.
