By shooting 8-under par 62s on Thursday, Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele each got off to the lowest starts in the tournament's 123-year history.
The second round was played at the Los Angeles Country Club with Fowler (4:32 p.m. ET tee time) and Schauffele (4:54 p.m. ET) leading the way. After shooting 6-under 64s, Dustin Johnson and Wyndham Clark are two strokes off the lead. At 5-under, Rory McIlroy and Brian Harman started the day one stroke behind.
Rickie Fowler
Fowler upped his total number of birdies in the U.S. Open to 18 after birdying the par-4 17th hole and coming close to making another on the par-4 18th hole. That indicates that he has already aced half the holes.
He started the event with the lowest round in the 123-year history of the competition—an 8-under par 62—and finished it with a 68. That equals the U.S. Open score record through 36 holes.
Fowler is about to write history once more. Brendan Steele set the record for the most birdies in a single U.S. Open in 2017 at Erin Hill with 22. Only 4 birdies separate Fowler from the record.
Fowler remarked, "Yeah, the fans have been wonderful here. "I feel like yesterday in particular as the round progressed, just sort of more and more energy with—with I started to get more and more under par.
"I'm excited about the weekend. I haven't felt this amazing throughout a competition in a long, much less a major. It will be difficult, but I'm eager to face the challenge.
Brooks keopka
Due to his remarks made on Friday at the Los Angeles Country Club, Brooks Koepka is unlikely to receive a U.S. Open citizenship award. He commented after his round of 1-under 69, which put him at even going into the weekend, "I'm not a huge fan of this place."
He said, "I'm not a big fan of blind tee shots, and then I believe there are simply some areas where no matter what you hit, the ball just ends there in the same spot. "I believe that playing on would be more enjoyable than playing in the U.S. Open. In fact, there were two 8s yesterday, I believe. That doesn't take place.
Rory McIlroy
On the par-3, 171-yard ninth hole, Rory McIlroy came very close to hitting an ace. On the final hole of the second round, he teed off, and his ball rolled only three feet less from the pin. McIlroy managed to tap the ball in for a birdie, his seventh of the round, despite not getting the required eagle. He and Xander Schauffele are tied for third place with a tournament score of 8 under par.
After shooting a 69 in the first round on Thursday, Phil Mickelson's performance suffered in the second round when he shot a 4-over 74, bringing his two-day total to 3-over.
