On Sunday, Wyndham Clark unexpectedly won his first major tournament at the U.S. Open by defeating Rickie Fowler and fending off Rory McIlroy.

Instead of a famous golfer enjoying the occasion in front of jubilant spectators on the 18th green, Clark, a relative unknown, was doing so at the Los Angeles Country Club.

With a final round score of 10-under, Clark, 29, finished one stroke ahead of McIlroy and five strokes ahead of Fowler. Despite making bogeys on holes 15 and 16, he managed to hold onto his lead over McIlroy, which had previously been three strokes. With pars at holes 17 and 18, he finished the final round with an even-par 70, which gave him the victory.

In search of his first major victory, Fowler and Clark shared the lead at the outset of the day at 10-under. He had three bogeys within the opening seven holes, however, and never recovered.

Fowler claimed, "I just didn't have it today." "Iron Play was extremely subpar and failed to generate any revenue. That's significant in the majors, particularly on a Sunday. Making putts and generally maintaining a stress-free environment.

McIlroy pursued Clark throughout much of the day in an effort to snap his nearly nine-year major championship winless streak, but he was unable to catch him with his solid game. During his even-70 round, he had one birdie and one bogey.

McIlroy stated, "I definitely never give up. "And I'm closing in. I know that if I keep putting myself in these situations, eventually something will happen to me.

Clark received $3.6 million and well-deserved name recognition for winning the race.

Clark is the son of a former professional tennis player and was raised in Colorado. He went professional in 2017.

For PGA Tour fans, Clark's surprising victory was less shocking. He has six Top 10 finishes throughout the 2022–2023 season, and he won his first Tour event at the Wells Fargo Championship in May.
